Video 2 - How Opioids Became Abused

Use this outline and edit as you like to create your second of 3 opioid videos.

Intro:  Hello, I'm ________.  Why I'm making this video.  I want to make it clear, I'm not against medicines, I'm against the abuse of medicines.  Opioids have been heavily abused.  People are dying daily of overdose.

1. Stats are almost unbelievable
a) over 90 Americans die daily from drug overdoses and majority is right here in Ohio
b) Drug OD now exceeds auto A. as leading cause of accidental death in Ohio
c) NEJM study reports 80% of all heroin addicts got started with prescription opioid painkillers used for pain or injury.
d) its a problem that's completely out of hand and should have been addressed years ago.

2. It took off in the mid 90s, it was the perfect storm causing opioid abuse.
a) 1996 American pain Society trademarked the slogan "pain, the 5th vital sign." Placing strong emphasis on getting the patient out of pain.
b) VHA followed suit repeating slogan and emphasizing getting patient out of pain.
c) Doctors were graded on how well they got patients out of pain
d) Purdue Pharma invented Oxycontin 1996
e) Docs were told that narcotics including opioids were not addictive. Research misquoted as only 1% addiction rate
f) Scripts rose drastically, opioids were top seller for any pain even the smallest strain sprain.  Prescriptions have quadrupled since 1999

3. Research showing 1% addiction rate
a) Was not research at all.  It came from a one paragraph letter to the editor in 1980 to the NEJM from 2 doctors, Porter and Jick.  This letter became the foothold pharmaceutical companies used to convince docs that opioids were harmless.  With time the letter somehow became known as a scientific study and was quoted often.  Obviously we now know the risk and dangers of addiction is extremely high from the statistics of people getting hooked and dying from OD

4. Pill mills were born
a) What is a pill mill
b) owner could be anyone
c) doc was hired that couldn't find employment and could write prescriptions for sched. 2 drugs
d) street value of oxys was $80 per mg.
e) people would go to heroin when couldn't afford or get oxys.  Cheaper
d) NEJM study shows 80% heroin users came from people on opioids first.
